Financial Powers of Attorney

Why Do You or Someone You Love Need a Power Of Attorney?

It allows someone you choose to handle your money and other personal and financial affairs when you or the person you love can’t. It could be because someone is sick, hospitalized, or for any reason is just unable to handle their own financial affairs.

What Are Some of the Things One Can Do With a Power of Attorney?

  1. Take in money, pay bills and take control of the contents of a safe deposit box.
  2. Write and endorse checks and handle deposits and withdrawals from bank accounts.
  3. Borrow money, sell or buy real estates, handle legal matters.

What if you don’t have a power of attorney- what kinds of things can happen?

If you don’t have a power of attorney and a situation arises where you need to handle a loved ones matters, you will most likely end up in court seeking a guardianship, a process that is much more cumbersome and expensive than obtaining a powers of attorney.

Can I do it Myself?

Yes, but be aware that many of the forms you may find on the internet are not accepted in the Pennsylvania Courts. Also by not having an attorney review the power of attorney before it is signed, you may not achieve the results you are looking for. It may be ineffective and unenforceable.
